Our History
Egon Osterreicher, an Austrian refugee, was the founder of John Kellys (London). It was incorporated in 1940. Egon had arrived in the UK in 1938.
After the war business opportunities abounded. By far and away the most fruitful area of trade was in spices of all kinds. Pepper, ginger, cardamoms, chillies, the list was endless and the post war world was literally hungry for a more enriching consumption of produce.
In due course Egon located to an office in Old Broad Street in the City. By 1950, his son Heinz joined the business and gradually made a plan to locate to America to set up an office there. However, at the age of 59 Egon died. At 28 Heinz now had to take over the business.
Apart from spices, essential oils, pharmaceutical drugs, pharmaceuticals and chemicals were added to the range of products that were traded throughout the world.
Heinz moved offices to Ibex House in the Minories, after which in the late 1960’s he bought a building in Prescot Street in which he worked right up to his death in 2007. The business was passed down to his two sons Adrian Astor and Julian Astor, and still continues to be a global player concentrating on essential oils, spices, aromatic chemicals and flavours.
